Below is a number of images showing the various iems used to give my layout Tees Valley some scenery
Firstly I wanted to give it some varied scenery with hills as the main back drop I had some old fruit crates laid around used for storing various items in cupboards these where cut in half and screwed to the base board then I used crumpled paper and pieces of wood I had laid around to give the hills some landscape look I then covered them with Gaugemaster spring grass covering which works really well. Finally I used Gaugemaster N gauge felxi hedge look to hid the joins and OO gauge felxi granite wall to gave a picnic area style. I felt N gauge works better to give a distant feel
Next came the corners of the base board to break down the square look of a railway its vital to use these to good effect the 2 corners either side of the hills I wanted to give a rugged look I tried alsorts of things from furniture foam found in cushions, balsa wood, hard wood, and even the same style used in the hills but I simply could not get the look I was aiming for until I thought id use the real thing and I knew of a bloke pulling down an old out house the slates from the roof where perfect broken into various sizes and built up.
The other 2 corners either side of the station will house a station carpark and signal box area with trees and flower beds the signal box will also recieve internal lighting.
The Platforms to form my main station again built from scratch from balsa wood with a through running plaform and a bay platform to give a branch line feel this is still under construction with lighting and canopies still required ( Feb 2009)
The main station entrance - ticket office is a Hornby production model St Micheals School but this fitted exactly what I wanted and has internal lighting installed.
The stepped area leading upto the station entrance has a typical illuminated station clock over looking the carpark area.
And so the build continues at a steady pace a couple of pointers have arisen from the build firstly always keep an open idea of your build dont just stick to your original plan or idea as its never as easy to build as you first imagined, try to recycle household items where possible I find it massively cheaper, The Gaugemaster grass mats I find absorb glue like a sponge to keep in place extra scenery items like the flexi walls and hedging I used tiny pins where used to hold these in place
